Okay, so we need to have a relevant and engaging 'big question' to work from which will cover the outcomes surrounding multi-digit multiplication. So here it is. This year I'm not planning our end of the year field trip - YOU ARE!!! Every year we go for an overnight trip to The Great Escape, but my head hurts and I just can't do the math. You are going to have to help!
Here is some information that you'll need:
There are 22 grade sixes in our class
There will be 3 adult helpers coming with us
How many people is that all together?
The cost of an overnight party at The Great Escape is $35 per person
If we add laser tag, that's an extra $5 per person
If we add Airtrak, that's another $5 per person
If we add mini-golf, that's another $5 per person
How much per person so far?
Wait - there's more:
The bus costs $55 per hour and we need it for 3 hours Friday night to drop us off and 3 hours Saturday morning to pick us up (both are round trips).
How much will that cost?
And how are you going to figure this all out without using multiplication?
Okay, so now that you have an idea of the different parts, you have to add it all up and come up with our final total cost. Got it?
Good.
Remember how everyone had to put down a $20 deposit for the trip? Well we have 22 x $20 in our account already. How much is that? And how much do we have left to pay?
Alright, now divide the amount owing by 22 for the outstanding cost per student for the trip (we have to pay for the adults because they wouldn't pay to stay up with us all night!) Don't worry - we'll do some fundraising to bring that number down!
So - are we ready to go yet? Nope, not until you've figured out the answer!!!! Good luck!
